Praying with Paul

Emergency Prayers

Romans 15:30-33 – April 27, 2003

This is the final sermon in the series, Praying with Paul. We started on the first Sunday of January and we come to an end on the final Sunday of April. In my first message I introduced our church theme for 2003, “Lord, teach us to pray,” and I mentioned that this was a logical […]

Romans 15:5-7 – April 13, 2003

With this sermon, we are almost to the end of the “Praying with Paul” series. There is one more sermon after this and then we are done. The prayer we are looking at in this sermon is different from any of the others in this series. All the other prayers could be answered individually. “I […]

When in Trouble, Pray!

II Thessalonians 3:1-5 – April 6, 2003

On the day when the war in Iraq broke out, Channel 5 in Chicago sent a news team to cover our special prayer meeting that night. Hoping to get some good sound bites, they interviewed several people, including Soo Ai Kudo. When the reporter asked her why we were having a prayer meeting at the […]

Strength for the Journey

II Thessalonians 2:13-17 – March 30, 2003

About six months ago I received a letter from Pat Williams, Executive Vice-President of the Orlando Magic (a pro basketball team in the NBA). Although I had never met Mr. Williams, I knew he was a brilliant sports executive and also a fervent Christian. He wrote to say that he was working on a book […]

Hanging Tough for Jesus

II Thessalonians 1:11-12 – March 23, 2003

I would like to call your attention to verses 4-5 as we begin: “Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring. All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of […]

Lucky to Love

I Thessalonians 3:10-13 – March 16, 2003

“Prayer is not everything but everything is by prayer.” So said Ray Ortlund. All Christians would agree with that statement. No matter what our background, instinctively we know that prayer is central to the Christian life. Most of you are familiar with Corrie Ten Boom. Her family hid Jews in Holland during World War II. […]

Wanted: Bold Believers!

Colossians 4:2-4 – February 16, 2003

Learning how to pray effectively is essential for spiritual growth. Based on the prayers of Paul, we can learn to pray boldly for the commitment of those on the front lines of spiritual conflict, for open doors of opportunity for evangelism, for courage despite difficult circumstances and persecution, and for clarity in presentation of the Gospel – especially encouraging pastors.

How to Pray with Power

Colossians 1:9-14 – February 9, 2003

Life has meaning and is worth living when we pray for God’s will to fill our lives. Trusting God with control or our lives encourages us through hard times as we follow in faith. Our commitment to God’s will means we can live a life that that pleases Jesus and makes us part of His amazing agenda.

Don’t Settle for Second-Best

Philippians 1:9-11 – February 2, 2003

In this message I want to give you some very practical advice that could energize your prayer life. As we begin moving in that direction, here are three opening observations to think about: 1. Prayer is both the easiest and hardest discipline of the Christian life. It is the easiest in that the youngest child […]

Beyond Your Dreams

Ephesians 3:14-21 – January 26, 2003

Pray boldly for spiritual strength, teaches Paul. God is faithful and we can trust Him. He is more than able to do even more than we ask.. Through prayer, we are filled with the Holy Spirit and grow spiritually, understanding the height, breadth, length and depth of Christ’s love for us.

Open My Eyes, Lord

Ephesians 1:15-23 – January 12, 2003

I wonder if we would be happy if our prayers were published so that others could read them. That’s a fascinating thought, isn’t it? What if every prayer you prayed, word for word, somehow ended up on the Internet so that anyone, anywhere could read them? Would our prayers be worth reading if they were […]

Helping Through Prayer

II Corinthians 1:8-11 – January 5, 2003

Prayer helped Paul when he was depressed and discouraged, giving him hope and encouragement through trust in God. Praying for others and the prayers of others for us glorify God, partnering with Him to help those in need and heightening joy as our prayers are answered.
